Petitioning Begins
Group seeks to get 250 signatures to overturn Union development decision
FIRESTONE — A group of Firestone residents has begun collecting the 250 signatures it needs to overturn the town board’s decision to annex the 350-acre Union development into Firestone town limits. If InformFirestone collects enough signatures, the annexation could go to a vote of the people.
“The crux of the issue is that there need to be some more questions answered,” said Dan Sanger, a member of InformFirestone.
This is the second time a community has asked that the Union development — owned by 4C, LifeBridge Christian Church’s business organization — go before voters. Longmont residents collected enough signatures last August to demand a special January election regarding 4C’s request to annex into Longmont. 4C withdrew its application before the election could be held, then applied to annex into Firestone.
Members of InformFirestone will have until June 15 to get the 250 signatures, which is the equivalent of 5 percent of registered voters.
“We would like to be done by June 13,” Sanger said. “We are going to work to overshoot the 250.”
Members of the group will be outside King Soopers and the Firestone Post Office each day and will go door-to-door in town.
The group started the petition drive because its members shared a concern over the hastiness with which Union was annexed into the town, Sanger said.
“I don’t want to take the stand that the annexation is bad, but the annexation was done quickly,” he said. “We need to look at all the information that is a part of it.”
Group members hope the petition will move board members and residents to research all aspects of the Union project, including the overall cost to the community and how fire and police services and water will be provided to the annexation before making the final say.
4C submitted its application to Firestone on March 25. It was approved by the town board on May 8.
