FIRESTONE - June 3, 2008 - The concerned citizens group InformFirestone announces the initiation of a referendum petition effort to bring the recent Union annexations by the Firestone Town Board to a vote of the people. These annexations represent a potential turning point for the Town of Firestone and deserve careful and deliberate consideration before moving forward. There are many unknowns on this issue, and although the Town government has moved to annex Union, details regarding the cost to the citizens of Firestone in dollars and the diversion of services have not been fully examined. Unresolved issues include, but are not limited to:
- Overall Cost to the Community
- Allocation of Services, such as Police and Fire
- Allocation and Availability of Water for Commercial and Residential Uses
It is our intent to bring this decision before the citizens of Firestone and to provide them with an opportunity to gather as much information as possible before making a decision that has the ability to change the face of Firestone forever. The petitions have been carefully crafted and are expected to be approved by Firestone Town Clerk Judy Hegwood by Thursday. The petition effort will start immediately thereafter and will run through the 15th of June. Petition signers must be residents of the Town of Firestone and registered Firestone voters. Because the annexation of the Union project was accomplished in two parts, there are two petitions that require signatures.
Petition circulators will be located at the Firestone Post Office and King Soopers. Other signing stations in and around Firestone are planned. InformFirestone will also be canvassing neighborhoods to provide information on the referendum petition and to collect signatures. We encourage anyone who wishes to sign the petition, or would like to volunteer as petition circulators, to contact Tom Ward or Dan Sanger. Signers or volunteers can also contact InformFirestone by email at informfirestone@gmail.com. We are expecting to launch our website www.InformFirestone.com soon.
By referring the Union annexation to the voters, all parties will have a chance to provide the information that the voters of the Town need to understand the scope of the project and to make an informed choice as to whether this project should proceed. Simply put, we need to know what we are buying before putting our money on the table.
InformFirestone is a group of Firestone residents working with other Firestone residents to raise awareness of this matter and to educate the voters of the Town of Firestone of their rights and privileges in this and all matters pertaining to the Town.
